Jasper…A Walk in the Past
Nightly, 7:30pm, Meet at JNP Information Centre

Take a step back in time and discover the characters that helped shape Jasper National Park and the mountain town of Jasper. This 1.5 hour historical walking tour of town takes participants on a personal journey into the past through a variety of stories about the people, places and events that have made Jasper what it is today. Get your free tickets at the Friends’ store, located in the Jasper National Park Information Centre.

Junior Naturalist
Daily, 5pm, Whistlers Campground Amphitheatre

This exciting environmental awareness program helps young visitors gain an understanding of the natural world and their important role in helping to protect it. Through a variety of hands-on activities and adventures, children (aged 6-10) can get out, get active, and learn more about the outdoors. To ensure a spot (space is limited), parents must pre-register their children at the campground theatre.
NEW! (Don’t) Get Lost, Buddy!
July 4, July 16, July 31 at 10am

Are you planning to get out on the trails and into the backcountry of Jasper National Park? Before you do so, join your Friends for a half day introduction to the proper use of map and compass as navigational tools. Email info@friendsofjasper.com for more details or to sign up.

MAPS Bird Banding
July 5, July 11, July 24 at Dawn

Have you ever held a song sparrow in the palm of your hand? If you volunteer with this project, you just might get the chance. In June and July, Friends’ resident birding specialists and volunteers set up a Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) station to study bird migration. Get your up-close and personal view of nature by taking part in this important research. Email volunteers@friendsofjasper.com to sign up.

Jasper Trail Alliance: Volunteer Work Bee
July 9, 10am to 1pm and July 17, 6pm to 9pm

Join the Friends’ Jasper Trail Alliance and help to improve trail conditions in the Park – through rehabilitation, restoration and creation. Come out and enjoy the fresh air, get a great workout, make new friends and gain a deeper appreciation of the trail network in Jasper National Park. Email volunteers@friendsofjasper.com to sign up.

NEW! A Walk in the Woods
July 10, July 25 at 10am

Join us for a hike (1.5 to 2 hours) in the forests around Jasper to learn about the ecology of the various trees and plant species that make up the forest community. You’ll learn about forest succession, regeneration, prescribed burns and more! Please email info@friendsofjasper.com to sign up.

Hiking Club
July 9, July 26 at 10am

Are you new to the area and want to meet other people interested in hiking? The group will tackle different trails around the park each month. Please email info@friendsofjasper.com for schedule, hikes or to sign up.

Parks Day
Saturday, July 20, 10am to 4pm

All across the country Canadians will be celebrating the importance of our parks and historic sites and, in Jasper, the Friends of Jasper National Park will be hosting the party.  You won’t want to miss the guided hikes, climbing wall, barbecue, interpretive displays, guest speakers, children’s activities and more that take place throughout the park. (See the Parks Day tab for full details)

FJNP 30th Anniversary Party
Saturday, July 20, 6pm to Midnight

Mark your calendars for this special event! The Friends will celebrate their 30th anniversary with art, music, snacks, cocktails and more. Royal Canadian Legion, 6pm to Midnight. See calendar for complete details.

Full Moon Hike
July 22 at 10pm

Explore nature after dark with the Friends of Jasper National Park. A volunteer guide will bring you to one of their favourite places in the park to enjoy the night sky and the full moon. You’ll learn more about the stars, nocturnal animals and things that go bump in the night while enjoying a moonlight hike. Stop by the Friends of Jasper National Park store beginning the day before the hike to pick up your free tickets. Space is limited.

Spring has sprung here in Jasper and it’s time to get going on the trails and to start planning for the summer. 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Friends of Jasper National Park and we have lots of things planned to mark the occasion. To make this happen, we need YOUR help! We have a number of upcoming volunteer opportunities coming up and we’d love to include you…

Volunteer Trail Days

Join the Friends’ Jasper Trail Alliance and help to improve trail conditions in the Park – through rehabilitation, restoration and creation. Come out and enjoy the fresh air, get a great workout, make new friends and gain a deeper appreciation of the trail network in Jasper National Park. Here are our upcoming trail dates:

  • Saturday, May 11, 10am
  • Monday, May 13, 6pm
  • Wednesday, May 22, 10am

Gift Shop Crew

Experience a behind-the-scenes fundraising opportunity at the Friends  of Jasper gift shop. From May to September, there are opportunities to help with folding, tagging, receiving and more. Please keep in mind that all funds raised in our store will be put toward park programs and projects. In May we’ll be looking for help with:

  • Moving (we’ll need help moving furniture in the coming weeks so that we can get carpet installed)
  • T-Shirt Folding
  • Sales Help

Do you have an idea for one of our programs or special events? Would you like to share your ideas on how to better market the Friends? Would you like to be more involved with the Friends’ operations? Take a bigger role in our programs and events, community profile and more by becoming an active committee member. We are currently looking for help on the following committees:

Want to share your knowledge of Jasper National Park with others? Why not be the leader or tail along a Friends program? Help share Jasper’s history on a Walk in the Past, share your knowledge of the night sky on a Full Moon Hike or help participants find and identify birds on our Early Birds program. We are currently looking for help with the following programs:

Publications Specialists
